Adriana Varejao
From the mid-1990s, the Adriana explored two juxtaposing motifs within her practice -flesh and tiles (or azulejos). The Jerked-beef ruin series (2000 - 2004) are likened to contemporary ruins, where the painted surfaces of floor and wall-based sculptural works are violently ruptured to expose a visceral flesh-like interior, providing a stark contrast to the cold tiled surface.

His paintings mean to frame past, future and the acutely present in one canvas. It is a view of the human figure that accounts not just for a single outer surface, but respects that perception is in equal measure directed inwards at a mind capable of transcending linear time.

Why do you set those found elements against a black void?
That’s partly just because of the way that allows you to use light: I get a pleasure from the luminosity of the original paintings and can capture that best against a dark ground. It’s also a nod to the notion of a void in abstract painting. And I think of them as night paintings. I use Lamp Black, which felt like the blackest black I could get my hands on.

Emma Hack
Emma Hack’s latest collections include a focus not just on the human body, but its environment. Since 2005, she has released a series of Wallpaper works that merge the human body with the wallpaper designs of Florence Broadhurst. Broadhurst’s lush, organic wallpapers are painted on nude models by Hack, who are then seamlessly inserted into the Broadhurst original.

Flore Nove-Josserand
It is concerned with notions of pictorial composition and the inter-relationship of one decorative surface to another. Flore Nove-Josserand draws on the concentrated vocabulary of formalist movements and that of the decorative arts: wallpaper motifs, textiles, and so forth, to create aesthetic playgrounds in which abstract forms and painterly marks can perform.

Hsin-Yao Tseng
Words of wisdom, from the astoundingly skilled, 26-year-old, San Fransisco-based painter Hsin-Yao Tseng: “It’s important to squint your eyes while studying your subject and to stand back from your painting frequently. Squinting simplifies the details so you can see the big shapes and value patterns of the subject. Also, you get a sense of the lost-and-found edges. Standing back from your painting lets you evaluate the unity of the piece. Seeing the unity prevents you from overworking detailed areas or making unnecessary brushstrokes.”

'I paint without preconception; my work is a spontaneous, passionate response to my internal world and the external natural environment. I strive for what Buddhists describe as “no-mind” – a state that is essentially free of thought and planning. Responding to what is happening in the work, I rotate the canvas or panel continually to “find” the painting. The physical act of creating is an integral part of my process – the gestures, the addition/subtraction of colour, form and line are an alternating rhythm of meditation and intensity.' Jane Theodore

The tornado in his work represents a perfect blend of mythology and science. He find it easy to imagine it being alive and unpredictable, to view it as a god or agent thereof. One sees this mile high banshee choosing certain targets and skipping others like a jittery reaper.

Jonathan Yeo
©Jonathan Yeo
Yeo has emerged as one of the foremost pioneers of figurative painting in Britain. His career as a painter has seen him confront a multitude of different narratives and themes. Content ranges from how we consume and discuss imagery, the modern day obsession of social media, actor’s in character, the pervasiveness of pornography, cosmetic surgery and societal portraiture. The appropriate personality to use as subject is decisive and Yeo uses them as a vehicle to explore the study of physiognomy, whilst simultaneously tackling often complex narratives and ongoing themes. Mette Skougaard, Director, Museum of National History, Denmark, said Yeo is “a pivotal force in the revitalisation of figurative art in general and in the art of portraiture in particular. "

"I paint, I draw, I write, and I photograph the world around me. I am inspired by the beautiful, the ugly, the evanescent. I am forever striving to emulate the wonder and fragility which the subject emits. Exploring the intangible and indescribable, to try and pin down the mystery of nature and of oneself...always slightly out of reach."

Magdalena Lamri
"Wrapped in a phantasmagorical cocoon, the young artist Magdalena Lamri pursues indefatigably her questionings on the image … Representation of bodies and flesh … Room of curious and curiosities of all kinds … The Art history feeds her. Since the end of her artistic studies and once her DMA obtained in ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres, the artist juggles with mediums, has fun with established codes and deceives paradoxes. She lives and works in Montreuil ( 93 )."

The main theme of my recent work is exploring the unfortunate reality of our present world. While reading the newspaper, articles began affecting me to the point that I realized I am a somewhat powerless artist and I wanted this to be reflected in my work. It has given me the opportunity to respond to social and environmental issues.
